I was really pleasantly surprised by this book. I've found myself getting fatigued by books set during/around World War II western Europe over the years, so when I do pick ones up set around then I always feel skeptical. However, I found The German House took a really interesting and nuanced approach to the topic and that the author, Annette Hess, developed some fascinating characters that were really exciting to follow. I felt that Hess' writing was really smooth and flowed well, though the pacing was a bit slow at times, which was a slight downside. However, once you get about halfway through things really pick up and I started to fly through it. My favorite thing about this book is how it really analyzes a lot of tough topics and themes and really makes you, as a reader, think about things. Four stars from me!
